History of the National Womens Inline Hockey Team

In 2002, six countries participated in the inaugural Women's Inline Hockey World Championships which took place in Rochester, NY, USA from July 19-23 at the ESL Sports Centre. The event was hosted by the Federation Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS).  In a very close and exciting gold medal game, Canada defeated the USA by a score of 2-0 to claim the World Champion title.  Australia defeated Japan by a score of 6-3 to claim the bronze medal.

The 2002 Team Canada roster included players,  Keely Brown, Cathy Chartrand, Ingrid Danylyk, Nicole  Dosser, Annie Desrosiers,  Kendra Fisher,  Donna Forbes, Andria Hunter, Teresa Marchese-Del Monte,  Leslie MacFarlane,  Kate MacNamara and Cherie Piper.  The staff consisted of Jeff Danylyk, Sandy Nimmo & Karolina Vudrag.

 

The 2003 Women's Inline Hockey World Championships were held in Pisek, Czech Republic, June 21st-25th. This time there were 10 countries participating, with Canada being favoured to win.  Countries were placed in 2 pools with the top 4 teams from each pool (total 8 teams) proceeding to the quarter finals and single elimination medal rounds.  Once again, Canada and the USA met in the gold medal game.  Unfortunately, Canada was not able to bring home the gold as they lost 2-1 in overtime.

 The 2003 Team Canada roster included players, Keely Brown, Quinn Caggiula, Isabelle Chartrand, Kathy Devereaux, Coley Dosser, Donna Forbes, Teresa Marchese-Del Monte, Erin Rourke, Christina Sorbara, and Amy Turek.  The staff included Gino Del Monte, Rob Coughlin and Rob Insley.

 

The 2004 Women's Inline Hockey World Championships were held in London, Ontario, June 25th- July 1st. Having the World Championships "at home" was an entirely different and exciting atmosphere.  All of the men's and women's teams were housed in an athlete's village as both tournament were running at the same time.  There were now 12 countries competing.  Countries were placed in 2 pools with the top 4 teams from each pool (total 8 teams) proceeding to the quarter finals and single elimination medal rounds. To no ones surprise, it was Canada vs USA in the final game.  Going into the gold medal game, Canada had outscored their opponents 88 to 1.  What a proud moment, playing in Canada on Canada Day in front of family and friends! The setting could not have been sweeter.  Fortunately, with hard work, patience and the ability to perform under immense pressure, Canada beat the USA 5-0 to win back the title of World Inline Hockey Champions.

The 2004 Team Canada roster included players, Meghan Agosta, Shannon Bowman, Keely Brown, Isabelle Chartrand, Ingrid Danylyk, Annie Desrosiers, Kathy Devereaux, Coley Dosser, Donna Forbes, Charlene Labonte, Nancy MacDonald, Teresa Marchese-Del Monte, Caroline Ouellette, Cherie Piper, Amanda Shaw, Amy Turek-O'Brien.  The staff included Gino Del Monte, Rob Coughlin, Rob Insley, Kirsten Krepps,  Kendra Magnus-Sobotka.

 

The 2005 Women's Inline World Hockey Championships were held in the Paris suburb, Viry-Chatillon, France July 1st-9th. There were 10 countries competing, each one improving tremendously since 2004. Countries were placed in 2 pools of 5 teams with the top 4 teams from each pool (total of 8) proceeding to the quarter finals and single elimination medal rounds.  Once again  the Canadian squad had immense pressure to defend its title as World Champions.  Of the 11 player roster, 4 players were rookies while 7 had experience playing at previous World Championships.  In round robin play, Canada beat Mexico 9 to 1, Spain 8 to 2, Germany 4 to 0 and France 2 to 0.  In the quarter finals, Canada faced Australia and won 12 to 0.  In a semi final match against Germany, once again the score was 4 to 0 in favour of Canada.  For the 4th time in a row Canada was facing the USA in the final. In a very close game, Canada came out on top to defend its title as World Champions as they beat the USA 1 to 0. This was the third title for Canada in the tournaments 4 year history for women.

     The 2005 Team Canada roster included players, Lisa Marie Breton, Keely Brown, Quinn Caggiula, Christie Carneiro, Isabelle Chartrand, Latoya Clarke, Kathy Devereaux, Coley Dosser, Donna Forbes, Teresa Marchese and  Samantha Shirley.  The staff included Gino Del Monte and Kendra Magnus-Sobotka.

 

 

The 2006  Women's Inline World Hockey Championships were held back on North American soil as they took place in Taylor, Michigan.  Once again Canada dominated the pool play and heading into the gold medal game. As in previous years, it was a USA vs Canada Final. After an intense, fast action game, the USA squeezed out a victory with a 2-1 win.

     The 2006 Team Canada roster included players; Meghan Agosta, Michelle Bonello, Keely, Isabelle Chartrand, Julia Colizza,  Nicole Dosser, Kathy Devereaux, Nicolette Franck, Jackie Jarrell, Brooke Ludolph, Teresa Marchese, Cherie Piper, Samantha Shirley. The coaching staff included Gino Del Monte (GM/ Head Coach) and Donna Forbes (Asst GM & Asst Coach)

 

Therefore, not only does Canada hope to attend the 2007 World Inline Hockey Championships, but it is imperative that we send our country's best players in order to bring back the Gold to Canadian soil.
